Why Activity Works Was Developed

Activity Works was created through the collaborative efforts of North Shore-LIJ Health System, educators and community advocates to assist schools in pursuing three critical health and education objectives simultaneously:

No longer are school leaders forced to make a choice between "academics" and "physical education." Teachers can pursue both, at the same time, within the small space of a typical classroom.

The end result:

  • Improved student knowledge, listening skills, attention span and behavior.
  • PE mandates satisfied: 50 - 100 minutes weekly contribution to Physical Education requirements.
  • Transition tool for teachers: moves students from one academic activity to another without losing control.
  • Healthy lifestyle techniques that improve academic fitness and help combat childhood obesity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children are encouraged to achieve at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity per day. School regulations typically call for 120-150 minutes of physical activity a week (30 minutes or less per day). Many schools struggle to meet even that modest goal.

A Unique Kinetic Protocol for the Classroom

The strength of Activity Works resides in the science at its core. Using a proprietary Kinetic Protocol developed by medical experts, Activity Works helps children reach CDC and state exercise guidelines in short but impactful "activity bursts" throughout the day.

Activity Works uses imaginative audio and video adventures to gradually increase and decrease student heart rates in a controlled -- and fun! -- 10-minute segment.

Content for the adventures was drawn from analysis of key learning standards and is supported by Lesson Guides for the teacher.
