As a second grade teacher for the past ten years, I have noticed a significant decline in overall student motivation to succeed in school. One of the most striking factors that influence the level of motivation of many early childhood students is lack of physical activity. Too often, American students, especially in urban areas, are kept indoors, without organized and consistent physical activity, either indoors and/or outdoors. As a result of limited to nonexistent mobility and physical activity, our students have become overweight, lazy, and unmotivated. Why? Several reasons exist but again, one that stands out in the forefront is the monotony of the traditional school day plus inconsistent physical activity in a structured academic context.

Our students are "actively engaged" in Activity Works and they really seem to enjoy the "adventure." The exercise is certainly beneficial and is helping us to encourage a healthier lifestyle to help fight the childhood obesity epidemic which plagues so many of our youth. It definitely helps those students who need "to move.
