Developing a Fitness Solution for Today’s Schools
Teachers and students have embraced Activity Works since its successful 2008-2009 pilot in an
IRB-approved Evaluation Study in Long Island, New York. The program has its roots in nearly three years of product
development and market testing under June Keenan, who served as North Shore-Long Island Jewish
Health System’s SVP of Community Health and Public Policy.
With North Shore-LIJ’s commitment, and supplemented with a grant from Bank of America, Keenan united educators, health professionals, and community leaders to bridge the gap toward the CDC’s childhood exercise guidelines. The result was Activity Works, an audio and visual solution that introduces fitness into the elementary-school classroom via short "activity bursts." Using a proprietary kinetic protocol developed specifically for the program by a Clinical Exercise Physiologist, the program employs content-based adventures that tie into academic and PE curricula for grades 1 - 3.
The Future of Activity Works
Based on critical acclaim from educators, policymakers, and health officials, Keenan
crafted a licensing agreement with North Shore in May 2009 and Activity Works Productions, LLC was born,
with June Keenan as CEO. The young company continues to gather momentum:
- May 2009: NS-LIJ provided congressional testimony on the Activity Works philosophy.
- June 2009: The New York State Education Department recognizes Activity Works as a viable way to help meet their mandate for elementary physical education minutes.
- August 2009: Activity Works was endorsed by the Suffolk NY Board of Cooperative Education Services.
